As leaves begin to transmute into warmer colors and people start layering their clothes, there is no better way to spend the chilly days inside than to be bundled up and watching a film. Accompanying autumn in its fast approach, are a vast array of exciting films coming to theaters. Ranging from horror to family-friendly comedy, here I have provided a list of must-see movies coming out this fall.
Starting us off in September, the new horror movie Flatliners (2017) featuring Nina Dobrev, Ellen Page, and Diego Luna, centers around five med students who decide to go through an experiment which will let them experience the afterlife by stopping their hearts for short periods of time. As they get carried away, however, they may have to deal with the negative consequences of traveling between life and death.
If you happen to prefer a little more action and a little less horror, you might consider checking out The Mountain Between Us coming to theaters in early October. This film follows two strangers who experience a plane crash in the snowy mountains. Stranded, they must fight against the elements and learn to work together in order to survive.
Maybe these two genres aren’t speaking to you. If so, it may be a heartwarming movie you’re looking for and Wonder may just be the perfect match. Based on RJ Palacio’s New York Times bestseller, this movie tells the story of August Pullman who is entering fifth grade along with the other children his age. August is different from the other children, however, in the fact that he was born with a facial deformity and will be experiencing school away from home for the first time in his life.
To end with a laugh, you may want to check out Coco, an animated comedy coming to theaters this November. This family-friendly movie focuses on a young boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a musician. His life takes a turn, however, after he finds a guitar that takes him to the Land of the Dead where he must team up with the charming Hector, to navigate his way.
Whatever movie it is you’re looking for, I’m sure you’ll find something that’ll suit your needs this season. Besides, if all else fails, you could always stay home and find something on Netflix to watch while snuggled up with a mug of hot cocoa to keep you warm.
Back to school movies

Notebooks. Backpacks. Cafeteria food. Do these words ring a bell? What about a SCHOOL bell? School is in session Folks! If you’re anything like me, you’re probably looking back on all those awesome things you did over the summer. One of my favorite summer memories was simply watching movies with my best pals. I did some research and discovered that some of my favorite movies are also some of the cinematically top movies that feature high school life. Check these out!
Clueless- Cher, a very rich high school student, uses her sense of style to spruce up a new student at her school. Cher’s plans to boost her friend’s social standing are ruined when she sets her friend up with the wrong guy. To make matters worse, her step-brother is single! Movie Critic Sarah Wenk, says, “This movie is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, and it does an excellent job of transferring the story to a contemporary context.”
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off- This movie is about a clever teen, determined to take the day off from school. Ferris, his girlfriend Sloane, and his best friend Cameron, all manage to get out of school. The Principal isn’t too happy about this, and he makes it his mission to catch the hoodlums in the act. Adam Smith, from Empire, describes this film as “Sporadically hilarious, with roots that run far deeper than expected.”
Footloose- Ren McCormack, played by Kevin Bacon, is shocked when he finds out that the Midwestern town, his new hometown, has made dancing and rock music illegal after an unfortunate accident that occurred after a night of dancing and music. With help from his new friend, Willard, and the Preacher’s daughter, Ariel, Ren does all he can to get this town to loosen their restraining ways. Sandy Angulo Chen tells us this about Footloose. “Many remakes are unnecessary or downright depressing, so there's an element of surprise when one is actually decent.” By the way, this is one of my favorite movies.
Can’t Hardly Wait- Graduation night. The night that Preston has chosen to attempt to win Amanda’s heart. Graduation night is usually for parties and last minute yearbook signing; at least for most people. Preston’s friend, Denise, receives an unforeseen encounter with wannabe rapper, Kenny, and William plans to get back at Mike for all those years of bullying. This movie takes place over only one night! And what a night it was.
Do you want a present-day movie that features high school life? I suggest watching Spider-man Homecoming. This Marvel movie is also a movie that features high school. Who is the new Spider-man? He is none other than Tom Holland. Tom Holland started portraying Spider-man at age nineteen in Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland is back with his own Spider-man movie that takes place in Queens, New York. In this movie, Peter Parker juggles school commitments and the duties of becoming a Hero in training. All while keeping his identity hidden.
I am 16 years old and I am a junior.
"Be yourself; the world can adjust."
Likes: any flavor of ice cream, aquariums and zoos, 80's rock music, and Thrifting.
Dislikes: pickles, stupid trends (for example: dabbing and fidget spinners), and taking timed tests.
Horror Movie Time: Annabelle's Creation
Annabelle's creation: because who doesn't want to be scared of dolls? This terrifying movie is the spine chilling new addition to The Conjuring franchise. I thankfully have not seen this movie, because I rather enjoy being able to sleep. However, I have some resources that helped me figure out what this movie's about.
This film takes place twelve years after the death of a doll maker's daughter. The doll maker and his wife open their home for a nun and orphan girls to come visit. Not long after the visitors arrive, they are targeted by the doll maker's possessed creation: Annabelle.
My sister, Lily Browning, loves horror movies. Naturally, Lily went to the movie theater to see this new nightmare starter. Here are her thoughts. "It was way scary. It was really good and had a good story line, but I will never see it again."
Beauty and the Beast: is it the best disney movie?
I've heard some conversations debating whether Beauty and the Beast is the best disney movie; and now that there is a remake of this disney classic, I'm giving you my opinions.
Prince Adam (The Beast) was turned into some kind of an animal or a monster at age eleven. The movie doesn't depict this important detail very well. As someone who looks at everything that was in the book and compares it to the movie, that was a big mistake that they made. However, the directors and producers made up for that mistake with Belle's character. Belle is a strong young women, who wants to learn and who looks for personality over looks. Beauty and the Beast is easily ONE of the best disney movies, but it isn't THE best.
