Have you ever had a parent or adult say something along the lines of, “Social media is ruining our society?” Social media is a huge controversy in our society. Many are for it and many are against it. Nowadays kids have so much access to social media. One of the downsides of social media is that people are able to hide behind a screen and say whatever they want. Cyberbullying is a huge problem in today's society. StopBullying.gov stated that “Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology.”
I don’t think that most kids know the effect they have on another person or realize that when you post something, you cannot take it back. It may seem “funny” at the time, but to the victim it is intimidating and scary. The victims may brush it aside and act as though they do not care; however, it does hurt a little bit. It may start as something small but something small can turn into something large and destructive. Mich Lansing on wilx.com stated that, “Researchers surveyed nearly 4,600 third, fourth and fifth graders between 2014 and 2016 and found about 10% of them said they'd been victims of a cyberbully.”
Sadly many parents do not monitor what their child is doing on the internet. Nowadays we have unlimited access to anything. This is a blessing and a curse. We are able to find things in a matter of seconds yet we also have access to all the horrifying things and most of our lives are projected for everyone to see. Many people have experienced cyberbullying at least once in their lives and that one time is a lifetime of remembering. A plethora of people may have not even known their cyberbully. We can find almost anybody using technology. Ellie Dietz said, “I do not think that I have ever been cyberbullied, but I definitely witnessed it. It is sad to see and I hope that one day people will become aware of what they are doing.” Cyberbullying is a topic we do not discuss much, but it is important for people to hear so we can raise awareness.
Even though cyberbullying is an awful thing that comes along with the internet there is also a lot of good. Social media has created so many jobs. Many of these people who work with social media love their job and are doing good things with their work.
